Old Hickory House Serves BBQ for over 50 years
by Susan Sexton
A family run business, The Old Hickory House opened its doors in 1953 on Northside Drive, and they’re still serving Atlanta some of the best BBQ and Brunswick Stew in the South over 50 years later. Bill Black and his son, Jake, opened the restaurant, and it was the beginning of a great tradition. Today, the family is proud to say that four generations of their family has been putting "Some South in the Mouth" of hungry families for just as long.
From my many visits to the Hickory House, I‘d say go when you’re hungry. The BBQ and Brunswick Stew are old family recipes. For the education of novices, Brunswick Stew is a Southern style specialty that is made with chicken, pork, beef, tomatoes and corn.
Old Hickory House is also famous for it's Country Boy Breakfast with melt in your mouth homemade biscuits, creamy sausage gravy and cheese grits. That’s why, breakfast is served until 2:00 p.m on weekends and up until noon on weekdays. Everything on the menu can be “fixed to go". When you place your order, you can bet it will be ready when you get there.
When Jimmy Carter was President of the United States, The Old Hickory House flew BBQ and Brunswick Stew to Washington, D.C. Jimmy insisted it be served in the White House for Rosalyn and their guests. When “folks” move away from the area, they still call to get their "Q and Stew" shipped to them. They just can’t give it up.
Neighbors in two locations remain dedicated to The Old Hickory House in Dunwoody. It’s hard to beat consistently delicous food, and it’s obvious that the family has kept the original fine quality and personal service that started way back in 1953.

Great Chinese Food in Sandy Springs
by Susan Sexton
The Mandarin House, which serves Chinese and Vietnamese Cuisine, at both lunch and dinner, is one of Sandy Springs oldest restaurants and opened in the 70’s. Located on Roswell Road and Johnson Ferry Road, the restaurant has been serving Atlantans for decades. Known for its peaceful and tranquil environment, The Mandarin House is considered a destination in Sandy Springs for quality Chinese cuisine.
Whether you prefer fried rice, a pan-seared noodle dish, Cantonese, Szechuan or Vietnamese fare, this restaurant offers a selection of dishes to please all tastes. One of the most amazing things about the menu is the selection of soups; I was stunned to find hot and sour, vermeillci, rice, beef noodle, seafood, egg drop and more. For appetizers, you can’t beat the crab angels, edamanes (steamed soy beans) or the Vietnamese spring rolls. For entrees, an assortment of combination platters is sure to satisfy! Personally, my favorite is the pine nut chicken which is a specialty of the house.
Located in a convenient shopping center on Roswell Road, SANDY SPRINGS PLAZA, The Real Mandarin House offers a pleasing culinary experience with easy parking, attentive service and simply great food. Prices range from $6. 95 and up for entrees and the establishment offers a variety of refreshments such as beer, wine and teas.
